Teaching and Supervisory Responsibilities

I am involved in teaching and supervision. I supervise a MSc Dementia Studies student with their master’s dissertation on ‘Service Evaluation in Dementia Care’. I have taught on the BSc in Dementia Studies modules, ‘Approaches to Dementia’, and ‘People with Dementia and their Families’.


Dr Catherine Powell has a BA in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of York, an MA in Social Research from the University of Leeds and a PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of Leeds in 2014.

Catherine’s PhD, funded through a scholarship attached to the ESRC Timescapes study, was entitled ‘Intergenerational Relationships and the Ageing Population’ and focused on care, need and support in four-generation families (with living great-grandparents).

Professional History

Catherine has previously worked at the Open University in the Faculty of Health and Social Care. She was a Research Associate on the EU funded ‘DISCOVER’ project to develop digital skills of professional and family carers’ and the older people they care for, to enhance their wellbeing and social inclusion.

Current Projects

Catherine is a currently a Research Fellow working on the National Institute for Health Research funded ‘Better Health in Residents in Care Homes (BHiRCH)’ project on improving health care for residents in care homes.
