Industry Links / Accreditations

In this section, we focus on our links with industry and professional accreditation bodies.

  • One of our industrial mentors is Mark Fletcher (Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering) at Arup.
  • The Civil Engineering staff and students maintain close links with the ICE and the IStructE, and are involved in the organising of events such as technical evening meetings and networking events (e.g. ICE 'Beers and Careers'). Students are strongly encouraged to become members of these institutions to enrich their academic and professional development, and to eventually work towards chartership after they have graduated. Our previous and current students are also members of the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Graduates and Students Committee.
  • Our Civil Engineering Degree Program is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, consisting of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation(CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHT).

  • MEng Accredited CEng (Full) This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

  • BEng (Hons) Accredited CEng (Partial) This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as: 1. fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). 2. partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).  A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
  • All Civil and Structural Engineering students are encouraged to undertake an Industrial Placement Year after Stage 2 or 3 depending upon the programme of study.

Industrial Mentoring Scheme

Our industrial mentoring scheme offers Stage 2 students the opportunity to liaise with engineers working in the industry. Groups of participants are taken on a visit to their industrial tutor's site or office from which they gain valuable experience and knowledge. Students are encouraged to make further contact with their tutor after this visit and build a relationship which will nurture their professional development. Industrial Placements

All students are encouraged to undertake an Industrial Placement Year during their penultimate year which could be after Stage 2 or Stage 3 depending upon the programme of study. Whilst on placement students are registered as students so that they can make use of the services provided by the Careers and Employability Services, the students can request email, telephone or Skype appointments. The Careers and Employability Services can still be used up to 5 years after graduation.

Industrial Advisory Board

The Civil and Structural Engineering department greatly benefits from a proactive Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board. The Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board support the departmental activities and actively engage on strategic development of the Civil Engineering Department. Members of the Civil Engineering Advisory Board deliver gust lectures, facilitate site visits and are involved in mentoring of students.

Industrial Prizes

The Civil and Structural Engineering Department and our industrial partners provide 11 prizes per annum to high performing students in recognition of their achievements. Some of the prizes awarded to students include:

  1. Institution of Civil Engineers Student Prize - awarded to the undergraduate who is judged to have performed the best in the last two years of his/her JBM accredited civil engineering degree course as recognised by the Institution.

  2. Arup Prize - awarded in recognition of technical excellence and initiative to the undergraduate who achieved the best performance in the final year project.

  3. Arup Sketching Prize - awarded to the student or group of students who submit the best hand drawn sketches for the Civil Design project module.

  4. Institution of Structural Engineers Raymond Corrigan Memorial Prize - awarded to the student who most excels in Structural Design.

  5. Civil Engineering Department Project Oral Prize - awarded to the final year student who most distinguishes himself/herself in their Project Oral.

  6. Institution of Structural Engineers Prize - awarded to the student who gains the highest aggregate mark in the First Year.

  7. Institution of Civil Engineers Local Branch Prize - awarded to the student with the best overall performance in Stage 2.

  8. Faculty of Engineering and Informatics Prize - awarded to the student with best performance in his/her Stage 4 of the MEng programme.

  9. Faculty of Engineering and Informatics Placement Prize - Awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in his/her placement year.

  10. Civil Engineering Department Group Project - Awarded to the group of students who achieve the best mark in their Design Project.

  11. Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board Prize - awarded to the student with the most improved average in the last two stages of his/her course.
