Chemistry at Bradford

Bradford welcomes enthusiastic chemists with an ambition to develop their skills using imaginative solutions.

Through our programmes, we aim to provide you with a first class teaching experience and a passion for applying your skills to modern challenges. Our innovative undergraduate programmes in chemistry build on the core disciplines and provide additional skills for employment in key sectors.

You will study the fundamental components of modern chemistry, before taking the opportunity to specialise in one of the major sectors of the modern chemical industry. Our lecturing staff are all internationally recognised experts in their field who publish in top international scientific journals.

World-leading chemistry at the University of Bradford

Our school was one of a small number of chemistry departments around the world chosen by the Royal Society of Chemistry to be featured at the 7th EuChemS chemistry congress in Liverpool. Here Professor Rimmer, Dr Hickey, Dr Katsikogianni and Dr Javid discuss some of the elements of their research, and how it is making significant impact across a range of different fields.

Bradford ranks 18th in UK for Chemistry

Not all Chemistry departments are created equal, and here at Bradford we strive for excellence in everything we do. Our hard work, innovative research and commitment to developing our facilities and infrastructure has led to us being ranked 18th in the Guardian University League tables 2019 for Chemistry.

While this result is a positive one for us, we will strive to ensure that we continue to develop and improve year on year to offer the best possible chemistry experience to our students.

Why Bradford?

The School of Chemistry and Bioscience is very much at the heart of the Faculty of Life Sciences in Bradford. Our courses aim to get students into the labs as early as possible, because we believe that the combination of well delivered lectures and hands on practical reinforcement is the best way to develop emerging talent. We supplement these two teaching elements with small group tutorials and innovative teaching techniques to ensure students get as much out of their time here as possible.

While year one students on all of our pathways learn the fundamental elements of chemistry, pathways begin to diverge and specialise in the subsequent years and provide students with specific training for major employment sectors including medicinal, materials and analytical chemistry sub-disciplines.

Our newest pathway, Mathematical and Computational Chemistry, is the only programme of it's kind in England and Wales and promises to deliver cutting edge, innovative computational theory and practical content to the next generation of chemists.

Industry Standard Facilities

We have a range of teaching and research laboratories across City Campus. Centred in and around the Centre for Chemical and Structural Analysis (Analytical Centre) in the Norcroft Building, we are proud to be the hub of analytical science at the University of Bradford.

Students will make use of these facilities during their studies, following practical chemistry training in the undergraduate teaching laboratories. Our teaching labs are fully equipped with fume hoods, rotary evaporators, chromatography, spectrometry and synthesis equipment to provide complete training as a practical modern chemist.

Where can Chemistry take you?

We know that a prime concern of our graduates is career prospects. Within the UK, and particularly within the North-West of England, the Chemical Industry is a very large graduate employer and continues to grow. In fact, in a recent survey by the New Scientist has shown that skills in Chemistry are the most highly desired by graduate recruiters, with 25% of recruiters saying that graduates with a Chemistry skillset are the hardest to come by.
