The Power of DNA

Find out about the importance of DNA in understanding disease susceptibility.

In this session, you will gain practical experience carrying out PCR, to determine the carrier status of a patient with a family history of cystic fibrosis. You will also consider the family history of the patient and determine the likelihood of the patient carrying the gene for cystic fibrosis.

There will also be an opportunity to attend a presentation which includes a practical demonstration and audience participation.

The presentation will cover PCR, DNA sequencing, DNA profiling and Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) in studying disease susceptibility. It will include a look at some of the dangers and pitfalls associated with over reliance on GWAS and DNA profiling.
