Dr Gillian Westgate

Expertise: Hair, skin
During her 20-plus years working with industry, Dr Westgate led the scalp and hair biology research programme at Unilever Research and worked with major companies such as J&J, Philips, Mars, P&G in an advisory capacity. Her science knowledge has been used to launch new products and brands in the cosmetics industry.
She has a PhD in hair biology research and is a past President of the European Hair Research Society as well as a current member of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists.
Dr Westgate is a co-founder and Chair of Cosmetics Cluster UK (CCUK), a networking organisation for the sector. One of her current roles within CCUK is to improve higher education development for the cosmetics sector to improve employability in the UK.
Her main areas of interest are hair growth and the control of the hair cycle, skin biology and diseases, skin and hair pigmentation and hair texture, especially the biological and physical mechanisms for curly hair.
Her role at the University is to develop sustainable partnerships between industry and academic research across all research areas in the Faculty of Life Sciences.
